Match Report
We arrived at Kenton for that rare thing, being a local game, to
discover at the toss that other rare thing, a timed gamed! A
shortage of availability meant that the Goodwill handed full
one-day debuts to Usman Hassan (129) and James Dundon (130).
Having lost the toss (tails never fails eh?!!), we were invited to
make first use of the wicket and were put into bat. A fine opening
partnership between "Leo" Sayers and "Please buy my book from
Amazon" Wilson set the stall and several batsman chipped in all
the way down. However, with time ticking on, and a declaration
coming at tea, the Goodwill needed some momentum, and duly got it
once Correa had been dismissed through Darren Westwood and Sachin
Doshi. A couple of super sixes, some hard-hit fours, and some
excellent running (well, Disco wanted the strike) meant the
Goodwill got up to 235-8. The innings was also memorable for
"young" Andrew Callanan passing 2,500 runs with a lovely straight
six, and also through the fact that Andy was a bit tired and
wanted a sit-down, so managed to offer the umpires two options to
dismiss him, by being both LBW and run-out in one dismissal. It's
down in the book as LBW, though whether it counts as one or two
dismissals could come down to how many beer tokens Andy passes to
Mike Allaway at Sulhampsted.
When it came to take the field, the short boundary and setting sun
posed it's problems. Wickets were hard to come by and a couple of
missed opportunities meant the Goodwill, try as they might, could
not get on a roll as seen in previous games, and the task of
bowling Kenton out proved illusive. There was a maiden wicket for
Usman, a fine but unrewarded spell from James, and a fine knock of
98 not out from one of the Kenton openers.
The game meandered towards a drawn conclusion which meant the lads
retired to the dressing room to get changed, and listen to the
strange, high-pitched "Ooooooooh Nooooooooo's" coming from the
showers. The turn-out for washing was high this week, with Gareth
being the host as usual.
A trip to the unknown next week, with another first-time match as
we travel to North Enfield.
